I am interested in World War I photographic material

The focus of the Kriegsarchiv’s collection of photographs is on the First World War.

The “Bildersammlung Erster Weltkrieg” (c.100,000 photographs), organised by theatres of war, has been completely digitised and can be viewed and browsed online.

By clicking on the ‘Localize in archive plan’ tab, you can move from the detailed view to the overview; in the overview, clicking on the ‘+’ takes you to the sub-sections, whilst double-clicking on units takes you back to the detailed view. There, alongside descriptions and titles, you will also find the photographs themselves.

The First World War image collection can be searched online using keywords, for which you can use the Field search. To do this, set the drop-down menu in the ‘Title’ field in the first row to ‘contains’ and enter your search term in the empty field next to it. Next, in the second row under ‘Ref. code’, set the drop-down menu to ‘contains’ and enter the abbreviation ‘AT-OeStA/KA BS I WK Fronten’ in the text field. Then click the ‘Search’ button at the bottom and view the results in detail.

You can order digital reproductions of photographs by emailing ka@oesta.gv.at , stating the reference number and title. A fee of €6 per image applies. Please provide an exact billing address, including any additional details (VAT number, tax reference, etc.). For conservation reasons, the originals are no longer issued.
