I am interested in aerial photographs

The Kriegsarchiv holds aerial photographs of Austrian towns and villages taken by the Bundesheer in the 1930s (Bildarchiv der Österreichischen Luftverkehrs AG). These are isometric photographs showing parts of the towns or the surrounding area.

These photographs are currently being digitised and are only partially available for consultation in the shape of digital reproductions.

By clicking on the ‘Localize in archive plan’ tab, you can move from the detailed map to the overview map. In the overview, click on the ‘+’ to access the sub-sections, whilst double-clicking on units takes you back to the detailed view.

To search, please use the field search. In the first row, in the ‘Title’ field, set the drop-down menu to ‘contains’ and enter your search term in the empty field next to it. Next, in the second row under “Ref. code”, set the drop-down menu to “contains” and enter the abbreviation “AT-OeStA/KA BS LA 1. Rep” in the text field. Then click the “Search” button at the bottom and view the results in detail.

The aerial photographs are currently being digitised. Therefore, if you wish to order individual items as digitised copies from our image collection following a successful search, please send an order to ka@oesta.gv.at, stating the reference number, title, period of origin and previous reference number.

Aerial photographs of Austria taken during the Second World War are available through the NCAP (National Collection of Aerial Photography). This institution also provides one- or three-dimensional aerial photographs of locations throughout Austria as seamless mosaics complete with relevant geoinformation, historical records from allied intelligence services and image analyses. In addition the NCAP is able to supply reproductions of photographs and intelligence documents from other archives and government agencies around the world.

For aerial photographs of Austria from 1949 onwards please contact the Bundesamt für Eich- und Vermessungswesen (Luftbild).
