What we can do for you – and what we cannot

In essence the Kriegsarchiv holds the written records of the Imperial, k.k. and k.u.k. central military administration from the 16th century to 1918.

Our Archival Information System provides both an overview and more detailed descriptions of our holdings and it also explains how these need to be approached.

We are unable to conduct research in your stead and expect you to consult the archival material which you have identified as relevant either personally in our reading room in 1030 Vienna or, wherever possible, via resources that are already available online.

The Kriegsarchiv is no documentary centre and therefore does not assemble material or information on a specific topic or a specific person. However, we readily provide orientation where best to search.

For research work which you cannot carry out yourself please turn to professional historians or “genealogists” who may take on such tasks for a fee.
