I am looking for information on enemy prisoners of war in Austro-Hungarian captivity
The Kriegsarchiv does not hold systematised records on enemy prisoners of war, except for those who died in captivity. These individuals are recorded in the “Kartei zu den Sterbematriken ausländischer Kriegsteilnehmer” the consultation of which is subject to the restrictions imposed by the Austrian “Personenstandsgesetz”.
The staff of the Kriegsarchiv are unable to peruse this card index for you. You may either wish to carry out this research work yourself in person or ask a professional to do this for you.
For deceased Russian prisoners of war, there is a special, if rather fragmentary “Totenkartei russischer Kriegsteilnehmer” which records the death of the individual but does not provide any information on his life in captivity or his death.
Again the staff of the Kriegsarchiv are unable to research this card index for you.
Please note that important material, notably concerning the administration of the various prisoner camps on Austrian soil, is to be found not in the Kriegsarchiv but in Austrian provincial archives.
We do not keep material on prisoner-of-war camps located outside the borders of present-day Austria.
